Although Munawwar was born in Uttar Pradesh, he spent most of his life in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was an Urdu poet, but he used more duration and Hindi words in his couplets. Most of his love for his pen was for Maan. For mastering Urdu literature, he was also awarded the Mati Ratna Award by the Shaheed Shodh Sansthan in 2012. After receiving the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014, he returned it, and vowed never to accept any award from the government. Munawwar Rana’s daughter Sumaiya Rana told PTI that her father died at PGI Hospital in Lucknow, and his last rites will be performed on Monday. He is survived by his wife, four daughters and a son.
